New ID Cards Require New Photos up arrow

All WVU faculty, staff, and students who haven’t had an official photo taken since May 2002 must get a new one taken as part of the changeover to the new WVU identification cards. Everyone will be required to start using the new Mountaineer Card on July 1. All old cards will be deactivated. Photos must be taken by March 15.

Here is information about when and where photographs will be taken on the Morgantown campus:

Jan. 25: 9 a.m.-1 p.m., Stansbury Hall, Room 234

Jan. 26: 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Stewart Hall, Third Floor Conference Room

Jan. 27: Downtown Campus Library, Room 124LL

Jan. 31: Business and Economics Building, Room 401

Feb. 2: 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Knapp Hall, Room 517 (Computer Lab)

Extension employees located off campus may have photos taken at the WVU Jackson’s Mill Registration Building on Feb. 3 from 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and on April 5 or 6 (times to be determined).

Photos are taken Monday through Friday at the two Mountaineer Card Services offices in Morgantown during certain hours:

Evansdale Residential Complex
G-118 Bennett Tower, 8:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m .

Mountainlair

Main Floor, 12:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m.

… Because WVU Extension has only a few new employees, the New EmployeeOrientation that was scheduled for Feb. 8-10 has been canceled. All new employees who were supposed to attend that session will be registered for the fall session, which will be held Sept. 12-14. The Feb. 10 Professional Development Day has been canceled also.

… The 2005 Appalachian Grazing Conference March 22-24 will feature some of the best speakers in the industry along with many farmers. The meeting will be held at the Lakeview Resort, near Morgantown. The theme is “Foraging for Profit$.” Among the topics that will be covered are low-stress stockmanship, rotationally grazing beef cattle, pasture fertility, weed control in grazing systems, and equine pasture management. Richard Hamric resigned Dec. 30, 2004, from his position as operations manager at WVU Jackson’s Mill. He joined Extension on Feb. 1, 1999.

… Have You Heard?

Susan Gamble and her husband, Kent, became the parents of Lewis James on Jan. 14. He weighed 8 pounds, 3 ounces. Y ou may send congratulations to the proud parents at this address: 102 Oakview Lane, Beckley WV 25801.

Ruthellen Phillips will receive the prestigious Lewis Hine Award on Jan. 31 in New York City. She is being honored for her passion and energy in creating great programs for kids, especially Energy Express. Ruthellen is one of 10 men and women – both volunteers and professionals – selected from hundreds of nominees from across the nation. Each recipient will receive a $1,000 prize and a trip to the awards ceremony. The awards are presented by the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC), a private nonprofit organization founded in 1904. The award is named for acclaimed photographer Lewis Wickes Hine, who used his camera to document child labor conditions in the workplace in the early 1900s.

Would you like to represent WVU at a high school awards day program? Each spring, University representatives attend programs throughout the state to present more than $4 million in academic scholarships to graduating seniors. You may volunteer now and when the dates become available, decide if you are still able to participate. Travel expenses are the responsibility of the representative or the individual department. If you are willing to participate, request an application from Angela Brunicardi, special events assistant ( angela.brunicardi@mail.wvu.edu). Bill Richardson is one of the instructors of “ Rural Tourism Development,” a new Web-based tourism course. The course was mentioned in the Dec. 17, 2004, edition of “CSREES Update,” a U.S. Department of Agriculture newsletter. The course helps participants build practical skills to identify, develop, and improve tourism in rural communities. WVU Extension is partnering with the Southern Rural Development Center to offer the 12-week course to educators in the South beginning Feb. 3,

WVU Employees in Morgantown have until Feb. 28 to renew their campus parkingpermits for another year. For detailed instructions, check the University’s intranet ( http://intranet.wvu.edu/facilities_services/parkmgt.htm). If you have any questions about parking permits, contact the Parking Office (304-293-5502).

WVU will mail all W2 forms directly to employees this year, rather than attaching them to the Jan. 31 paycheck or pay stub. W2s will be mailed no later than Monday, Jan. 31, to the address listed on the paycheck or pay stub. If you have questions regarding your W2, contact WVU Payroll and Tax Services (304-293-5700, ext. 2460).

WVU’s Virtual Medical Campus (VMC) ® Homeland Security Program is offering three Web-based bio-terrorism training and preparedness courses. The courses are “Terrorism Recognition and Reporting,” “Multidisciplinary Response,” and “Acute Care Needs of Patients from Weapons of Mass Destruction Events.” The courses were developed with support from the Health Resources Service Administration, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The free, self-paced courses target the training and preparedness needs of healthcare professionals, emergency responders, and public health professionals. Each course lasts about two hours. Participants completing the courses may earn up to six hours of Continuing Medical Education or Continuing Education Units. Federal, state, and local agencies, along with national advocacy organizations, will launch the seventh annual National Consumer Protection Week (NCPW) Feb. 6-12. The theme is “Identity Theft: When Fact Becomes Fiction.” The week will focus on minimizing the risk of identity theft and taking fast action if one is a victim of such theft. Consumer advocates, adult consumers, parents, students or teachers, and others can use the resources on the NCPW Web site ( www.consumer.gov/ncpw). The site contains the NCPW Outreach Toolkit, a proclamation, a downloadable NCPW poster, banner ads, and buttons.

 … In Memoriam

Emma (Cackley) Hartley, 83, the mother of retiree Richard “Dick” Hartley, died Jan. 13 at Monongalia General Hospital in Morgantown. The native of Pocahontas County was a member of the West Virginia 4-H All Stars. She was a former school teacher. Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Robert L. “Bob” Hartley, three sons, seven grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to Suncrest United Methodist Church, 479 Van Voorhis Road, Morgantown WV 26505 or to WVU Foundation Inc. (for 4-H), PO Box 6031, Morgantown WV 26506-6031. Condolences may be sent to Dick and his family at Route 1 Box 223-B, Cairo WV 26337.
