How to determine "where" you are
This intranet site was designed so you will always know "where" you are. Although it looks similar to the Extension Service Internet site, the intranet site has a graphic on the top of each page labeled "intranet." If it doesn't say "intranet," then somehow you've navigated out of it. Another help are the footers. Once past the intranet opening page, at the bottom of subsequent pages you'll always find a set of footers that will help "ground" you. The footers are intentionally organized from left to right -- those on the left dealing with specifics; those on the right dealing with the "bigger" picture. For example, on the left you may find a "Top of Page" or a "Up One Level" footer, the latter linking to a "parent" document. Or you may see a footer that actually names that larger "parent" subject matter, e.g., Program Development. Continuing on the right, the footers return you to the intranet home page; link to the WVU Extension Service Internet; and link to the WVU home page. Keep in mind you can also navigate using the [BACK] or [FORWARD] buttons on your browser's toolbar.
WVU-ES Internet vs intranet
Our intranet is intended to be a place for in-house material that WVU Extension Service personnel and selected other university administrators can access. You may find some links on the intranet, however, that take you to the Internet. For example, "External Position Vacancies," under "Employee Resources," is actually housed on the Internet so they can be accessed by the public. So, in this example, although the link you see is on the intranet site, it takes you to the Internet site. There will be other instances when you'll find yourself linked to a place on the Internet, but again, just check the graphic at the top of the page to be sure you know "where" you are.
The key to understanding the differences between the the Internet and intranet is placing them in context. Again, the WVU-ES intranet site is for internal communications and the WVU-ES Internet site is for communicating with the public-at-large. When looking for WVU-ES information, employees are encouraged to begin by looking at the intranet site, since it will link to all other Web communications mediums where appropriate.
Getting Around
Remember that Web pages are designed with "hyperlinks" in them--sometimes in the graphics and many times in the text. You will know you are on a hyperlink when your "cursor" turns into a "hand" indicating that, if this link is selected, it will take you to another page. The default color for "unfollowed" text links is blue and indicated by an underscore. Once you've selected or "followed" the link, it will turn to purple to help you keep track of where you've been. Also don't forget to use your [BACK] button on the left side of your browser toolbar if you want to get back to a previous page location.
